CG Public Health conducts site evaluations, sets design standards, and conducts additional inspections and consultations for private sewage disposal systems (septic systems) within Cerro Gordo County. The purpose of this program is to protect surface and groundwater from contamination by human sewage. Human sewage carries many harmful pathogens that may cause people to become ill or even die.
During the site evaluations of new systems, inspectors determine soil types and locations where the septic system may be located. Then the system is designed to meet the needs of the house or other structure on the property. During the installation of the system, the inspector reviews the construction to ensure that the design standards are met.
A septic installation permit is required to install or alter a septic system. The Private Sewage Disposal System Permit Application and fee need to be submitted to this office prior to any work being started.
All septic systems installed in Cerro Gordo County need to be installed by a Certified Septic Installer.
Cerro Gordo County ordinance requires that all homes for sale receive a septic system inspection prior to the time of transfer. A Time of Transfer Septic Inspection must be conducted by a Certified Time of Transfer Inspector. Certified Time of Transfer Inspectors List. After the inspection is conducted, the inspection report must be sent to our office for approval/failure determination.
