Public Health takes as seriously the effects of tobacco use on the community as it does its vision to make Cerro Gordo the healthiest county in Iowa. There is no safe amount of exposure to second hand smoke. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at increased risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), acute respiratory infections, ear problems and more severe asthma. Exposure of adults to secondhand smoke has immediate adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and causes coronary heart disease and lung cancer.
Smoke Free Homes is a free program provided by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) that will walk tenants and apartment managers through steps to develop smoke free buildings. Smoke-free home policies have benefits for everyone involved. Tenants are happier, cleaning costs are reduced, there is shorter turnover time involved, insurance premiums decrease and the health of the community is protected.
In Cerro Gordo County, there are many properties that are smoke-free and not yet listed on the registry. We encourage all property managers and/or owners to participate in the Smoke Free Homes Program and enjoy the added benefits of free property signage, and a listing on the Smoke Free Homes Registry .
