Position Title: Public Health, Hospital, and EMS Preparedness Coordinator

Service Section: Environmental Health and Preparedness

Salary: $48,000-$52,000, DOQ

Position Description:

The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health is looking for a self-starter who is able to be a leader in connecting various community partners to improve our service areas response in an emergency situation. The perfect candidate is a people person, organized and motivated, able to communicate effectively in writing and orally, and skilled in data and reporting. We want someone who is flexible and innovative; organized and able to coordinate meetings with various partner agencies; able to develop plans and implement them; and have the ability to manage time and multiple tasks with little supervision. We need someone who likes to take on a wide range of responsibilities, provide timely responses to deadlines, and working well under pressure is also a must! The purpose of this position is to plan, organize, and coordinate emergency preparedness activities between public health, hospital and EMS agencies in a twelve county service area.

Position Title: Environmental Health Specialist I – Lead Hazard Control Field Inspector

Service Section: Environmental Health and Preparedness

Compensation: $22.36/hr. Non-exempt, full time position

Position Description: 

CG Public Health is seeking a full-time environmental health specialist to conduct environmental health inspections, and testing to prevent or eliminate environmental health hazards. Primary responsibilities will be full-time field work for the Lead Hazard Control Program funded by the U.S. Office of Housing & Urban Development. Some of the duties will include:

  • Conducting comprehensive lead-based paint and healthy homes assessments and sampling.
  • Monitoring contractor’s work on homes to ensure they are in compliance with handling and disposing of lead contamination.
  • Performing follow up inspections on homes after construction is complete to ensure lead levels are safe.
  • Providing lead education to health care providers, elected officials, property owners, landlords, real estate agents and the general public.
  • Collecting samples from homes that are potentially contaminated with lead.
  • Utilize lead testing equipment.
  • Utilize assessment tools to determine potential risks and make protective action recommendations.
  • Review bids from construction companies to determine which best fits renovation of the home and fits within the grant regulations.

Position Title: Environmental Health Specialist I 

Service Section: Environmental Health and Preparedness

Compensation: $21.63/hr. Non-exempt, full time position

Position Description: 

Seeking a full-time environmental health specialist to conduct environmental health inspections, investigations and testing to prevent or eliminate environmental health hazards.

  • Work within the Grants to Counties program to provide private water well testing, water well plugging, and water well reconstruction.
  • Provide residents with information/instruction on how to remove contaminants from their drinking water through treatments and treatment systems.
  • Utilize the Private Well Tracking System to track data collected
  • Conduct sanitary surveys for transient non-community public water supply systems within the north Iowa area.
  • Work closely with the Department of Natural Resources as well as other state and County entities to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Provide inspections of tattoo facilities, ensure compliance with regulations and follow-up as needed.
  • Provide full and complete documentation of all inspection and investigation activities.
  • Provide food inspections to restaurants in Cerro Gordo County. Document and follow-up with issues found.
  • Inspection of pools and spas to ensure swimmer safety.
  • Evaluation of property to permit installation of septic systems.
  • Design on-site wastewater treatment (septic) systems for installation.
  • Inspect on-site wastewater treatment (septic) systems.
  • Testing homes in Cerro Gordo County for lead based paint. Provide education/information to residents where elevated levels of lead are found in the home.
  • Investigate and enforce remediation on nuisance issues within Cerro Gordo County.
  • Assist with food and waterborne illness investigations.
